Buyer Guide: Best Tankless Water Heater Flush kit

Flush kit: Exactly what tools do you need?

A flush kit is a group of common tools that you need to flush the scale deposits in the tankless water heater. A flush kit needs at least 4 things. These are:

  1. A submersible pump
  2. A 5-gallon bucket
  3. A pair of 5ft hose pipes
  4. A biodegradable descale solution (so that it doesn’t damage the unit)
  5. Adjustable Wrench (for attaching and detaching pipes) although it is not always needed.

You need these things to flush a tankless water heater properly. You do not, however, need to purchase a flush kit to obtain them. You can also purchase these things separately to save money or purchase one or two things if you already have the rest. But by purchasing a flush kit you can save the time you may have spent looking for each item separately.

Isolation Valves

If you are a tankless water heater owner and don’t have isolation valves installed with the tankless water heater. We suggest that you take your time installing these valves. Isolation valves are a great addition to a tankless water heater and make the maintenance process very easy. An isolation value allows you to isolate water and gas flow to the tankless water heater. Hence, You can flush the unit directly without unwinding the water connections pipes. Similarly, you don’t have to shut down the water and gas connection to the whole house from the main access point. Hence, you won’t be sitting ducks for water and gas while the flushing of tankless water heaters takes place. The whole flushing process takes 40-60 minutes with isolation valves while it can take much longer without them.

Biodegradable solution

Biodegradable solutions are a must-have in a flash kit. They are extremely effective in removing hot scale buildup as well as are non-corrosive and non-toxic. This means that even if a part of it gets left behind in the tankless unit, it won’t harm you when you use hot water. Degradable solution vinegar is a popular one. Food-grade white vinegar is an effective biodegradable solution that can help you in descaling your tankless unit. Although it is not as good as other specialized descaling solutions it can get the job done.

Submersible pump

A submersible pump is an integral part of a flush kit. It circulates the descaling solution through the tankless unit, ensuring that no scalp gets left behind. A 1/6 horsepower submersible pump is required to flush a tankless style water heater. Submersible pumps having more power than this can be harmful to the tankless unit.

Hoses

Before buying a tankless water heater flush kit, make sure the hoses are of good quality. Most of the flush kits use cheaper quality washing machines or garden hoses that become a headache when you use them. No one wants to see the descaling solution spilling out of the hoses and making a mess. It is not much of a problem if you already have spare hoses at your home but if not, you have to purchase new ones can get quite annoying.

Instruction Manual

If you are new to flushing a tankless water heater makes sure to look for the instruction manual with the flushing kit. Most of the flushing kits come with their instruction manual that guides you on the best way to flush your tankless water heater with those kits. It is not much of a problem if the flushing kits only include the basic tools. But in case it uses some other technical device, it may become crucial that there is an instruction manual to guide you on the process.

Simple Flushing Guide:

To flush your tankless water heater, you need the following tools:

  1. 1/6 HP submersible pump
  2. 3-5 Gallons Bucket
  3. A pair of Hoses
  4. A descaling Solution (quantity needed may vary depending upon solution)
  5. Adjustable Wrench
  6. Screw Driver

The first step is to check for isolation valves on your tankless unit. Disconnect the tankless unit’s power supply. Using a voltage tester, verify that the unit is not receiving any electricity. Shut off the gas and water supply to the tankless unit. Remove the service caps on the isolation valves.

Fill the Bucket with descaling solution as instructed in the manual.

Connect one end of the hose to the cold water inlet of the tankless water heater while the other end of the hose needs to be connected to the discharge side of the pump.

The second hose needs to be attached to the hot water outlet with the other end of the hose being submerged into the bucket.

Now, put the pump into the solution present inside the bucket such that it is fully submerged. As soon as you will turn on the pump, it will circulate the solution in your tankless unit.

This way a closed-loop system will form in which the submersible pump will pump the solution into the unit through a cold water inlet. The solution will then circulate within the device before exiting through the hot water outlet and into the bucket. Bringing with it the scalp, sediments, or impurities present in the tankless unit. This process will keep on repeating until all the impurities are cleaned.

The whole process should take about 30-60 minutes for single use. Fill the bucket with clean water after draining the impurities-filled solution. Now, do the same process with clean water to wash the tankless unit of any solution remnants. Let it run for 5 minutes, once complete put everything in its place. Unwind the hoses, put the service cap on. Released the gas and water connection.

Simply plug in the tankless water heater and you’re ready to go. Wash all the flush kits and store them carefully for future use.
